Painting a house near the sea

Wollongong homes sit between the escarpment and the ocean. That means salt spray, humidity, mould on shaded walls and harsh afternoon sun on the western side. Here’s how we deal with it:

  • Salt and mould washed off first, or new paint lifts within a season
  • Flexible exterior acrylics that move with timber instead of cracking
  • Mould-resistant coatings on south-facing and shaded walls
  • Paint in the shade, so it doesn’t blister in full sun
  • Lighter colours on west walls stay cooler and fade less

Signs it’s time

When your house is asking for a repaint

Chalky walls

Rub your hand on the wall. If it comes away white, the paint has broken down and isn’t protecting much any more.

Peeling & cracking

Flaking on sunny sides and around windows lets water into timber and render.

Faded or dated colour

Street appeal matters, especially before selling. A new scheme can change the whole look.

Exterior painting questions

How long does exterior paint last near the coast?

With proper prep and quality exterior paint, a repaint commonly lasts 8 to 12 years. Salt air, full sun and skipped prep shorten that, which is why most of our time goes into preparation.

What time of year is best to paint outside?

Dry, mild weeks are best. We avoid rain, heavy dew and very hot direct sun, and follow the shade around the house in summer. Late winter through spring is popular in the Illawarra.

Do you need scaffolding for a two-storey house?

Often ladders and planks are enough. Where height or safety needs it, proper access equipment is arranged and included in your quote.

Is my exterior job covered by a contract?

Yes. Jobs over $5,000 get a written contract under NSW law, and jobs over $20,000 include home building compensation cover. Work is done under licence 390512C.

What about old paint that might contain lead?

Homes painted before the 1970s can have lead in older layers. Tell us the age of your home and we’ll talk through the safe way to prepare it before any sanding starts.
